Why I Should Be Out in the Desert

I can no longer be the one
to take your calls
when you just have to tell someone
that the love songs on the radio
now make perfect sense to you.
Oh, I know what you mean--
too well, in fact.
Life can be good
(just don't quote me on that),
and what's that the Pet Shop Boys
(my personal existential philosophers)
say about happiness?
Well, they're right.
I just can't hear it anymore--
least of all from you.
You must know on some level
that unrequited longing is dangerous,
especially when sharpened
to so fine and deadly a point.
I can go nowhere with it.
But having gone this far,
I now think the only thing to do
is keep going--
play it out like a hand in Vegas,
step boldly
out of this hurricane of perfect stasis.
