Sweet Dreams

Never before have I looked forward to the night
the heavy painted sky drug me down, smothered me under a blanket of solitude
lying stiff in bed, staring at the shadowed ceiling,
forced to face the crazy thoughts zinging around in the back of my brain,
anxious without the pleasures of my daily distractions
But even worse, were the fitfull dreams,
of falling elevators and guns and loosing teeth,
night-tremors that startled me awake and
had to be chased away with a glass of water and a cigarette,
smoked with a shaking hand.
But that was then...
These days I welcome the lazy wave of sleepiness, that crawls into my veins
and sings me a tinkly lullaby
That means once again its time to curl up in your strong arms, protected,
lay my cheek on your chest
where your regular breaths and thumping heartbeat lull me into a peaceful sleep
On the back of my eyelids I watch peaceful dreams
of rolling seas and porch swings and babies.
