Aunt Anna's Kitchen
Anna Married Marty---
that part I knew,
rocked the family
back in the 40's
because he was eye-talian
and we were czech,
and that was inter-racial back then.
They had two boys,
bought a house in Bayonne--
and Marty was killed
not long after I was born--
crushed to death
leaving Anna alone.
She was young when it happened--
probably could have gotten another guy
but you always got the feeling
that he was still around,
and she spoke of him with love
all those year later.
Her eyes would look off,
and she would tap a cigarette ash,
sip her coffee
and say his name like
she'd just talked to him a few minutes before.
And I never thought it strange
sitting there with her,
never wondered where he was---
always thought maybe I had missed him
leave for work,
and part of me knew he was gone---
but in Anna's kitchen,
she was just a lady waiting for her fella
and teaching a niece the secrets
of kolachy---or fresh turkey soup.
She waited a life time for that man,
and the call just came.
I guess Marty picked her up,
her beautiful dark haired lover
with the dago eyes
finally came to get his girl
and I'm happy for Anna---
but I'll miss her just the same.
For love,
for cookies dough,
for cups of sweet coffee
for talking to me like I was smart
and loving me, instead of just my dad's kid
Goodbye Anna---
Uncle Marty---take good care of her---
Make it worth her wait, okay?
