Medusa's Song

She will not be beloved
among the stones, her eyes brimming with the
salt-sea's root.

"I think I will sing to you a little,"

she said to the empty shore and closing sky.

"I will sing of the long days
climbing on rocks and cliffs
Standing on  precipices
drinking tea quite alone.

Of the wilderness I sing-- of water,
my river, flowing carelessly beside me,
tumbling smooth pebbles with restless thoughts--
River's roots in time
mine in thine."

she sighed.

"I will sing with the eagles that
           nest in the high trees.
I will sing of the cold stones
And of the mists where I was lost."

Will you hear my song
hit the blazing surface?
Hear it go under the current,
Fathoms deep-- ?

Ancient secrets she  sang
into luminous, watery beds.

"I will tell them all to you,"

she whispered,

while the crimson dusk
kissed her with passionate eyes -- and fled.

                    "The sky will witness
                     my loving you in lyrics."

It will speak when I am gone
The river  will take you down to the sea--
it will tell you
that I waited in the darkness--
"It will tell you one more secret."
