Winter Song

Orion blazes
in the winter night
The seven sisters
of the Pleides
swing in their
endless celestial waltz.

The wooing winter wind
romances the cedars
in the silent dance
and the evergreen ladies
follow his whining lead.

Glitter frost
snowflake soft
rests upon the logs
and hatchet
just beyond the range
of the campfire's heat.

The deer
have wandered close tonight
their eyes amber and curious
by the light of the fire.
My mind plays
connect the dots
with their tracks
in the virgin snow.

It is right to be here
tonight.
Turkey and stuffing
fill the world
But here
Stew and coffee reign.

Your picture
is propped
within the warm proximity
of the fire.

Your smile
is warmer than the camp
and I cannot feel the chill
over the warmth that fills my soul.

Sleep well, my princess.
We have world enough and time.
I promise on Polaris
the unchanging north star
to be as constant
and as faithful
in loving you.

For now
I wish the unknowing world
this same peace
unfortunate as they are.
After all, You are mine, not theirs.
