The Red Balloon

If you take a pin
And poke a hole
Into an empty balloon
Nothing will happen
Except that the balloon
Will have a hole in it
Which can easily be patched
But if you pierce
An inflated balloon
It will pop
And the damage
Will be irreparable.

My heart was an empty
Red balloon
When you left
And although the sharpness
Of your absence
From my life
Would make me sad
And disappointed
It would not have
Burst my heart
Because I expected
Nothing from you.

But when you called
And told me how you miss me
And sang softly in my ear
Each breath you spoke
Inflated my heart with hope
And yearning until it was
Full and round with expectation
So that your subsequent silence
Lanced it to the core
And I am left
With the burst fragments
Of a useless red balloon.
