Conquered

Where I have been there were no roads
no well worn paths to travel by
and so I went my own singular way
from battle ground to battle ground alone.

Of blood and fire I was a master
of fear and bitterness a merchant
and though I did not dwell in darkness
those who dwelt there knew my name
and retreated at my approach.

I have been he who walked before the pilgrim
I have been the apprentice of the reaper
I have been the arrow that flew by day
I have been the terror that walked by night.

I have been captured by a whisper
I have been bound by tender kisses
I have been humbled by sweet compassion
I have been broken with a smile.

Know then
That now I am the lion
here beside you in the midnight
and forever more
a lamb within your arms.
