Heaven or Hell
He sits behind his desk
The ruler of his world,
At least in the office.
Who knows what goes on
Behind closed doors
With shades drawn
In the outer realm of home.
He walks the halls
All business,
With a smile for those
He’s comfortable with.
Funny, how sometimes
It doesn’t quite reach
Those soulful eyes of his.
His sadness is carried
Like a shield
A barrier to keep hurt at bay
Not many see it
But then, not everyone
Notices the difficult things.
He takes what life has
Presented him,
Placing his dreams on
That get-to-it-later shelf.
Perhaps he’s happy,
Or maybe he has managed
To convince himself
Along with everyone else.
He is a family man
And he performs his duties well.
But I have to sit and wonder
Is this his heaven or his hell?
