On My Doorstep
There was a knock
At my door
At an obscenly late hour
Why was I awake?
I don't know
I just couldn't sleep
So, I answered the door
All tousled and slightly
Out of sorts
And there was a man
Standing there
"Excuse me, do I know you?"
I asked.
And he turned his face
Toward me
For it had been in shadow
And he just simply smiled
No,I couldn't put a name
To his face
Yet his face
Was hauntingly familiar
"You might know me, you might not.
But, the important thing is, that I
know you."
I almost slammed the door
In his delightfull face
What sort of a game was this?
"What do you want?"
I questioned.
I guess I was a little curious
As to why this stranger
Stood on my doorstep
As would you be, I suppose
"It isn't a matter of what I want.
What is it that you want?"
Still, I was puzzled
And it showed on my face
He took a small step foward
"Look at my face again, more
carefully this time."
So, I looked again..
Ah, then I knew
Then it was that I understood
I recognized that face
Knew his name
He hadn't been to visit
For quite a while now
A smile spread across
My face
I stepped back and invited
Him into my home
There is an old saying
That came to mind...
When love knocks
Always, always invite him in
