By Stands With A Smile

The Sweetest tune.
In life
we learn to deal with losing
by being graceful losers.
Not a desired lesson, but necessary.
I had become quite good
and bowing out
a smile on my lips
second best
"I understand,
I wish you both the best"
waiting behind my lips
like a trained dog
waiting to do his trick.
I had grown accustomed
to being too short
or too plain
or not having money
or looks.
My car has never been
a new one
my home not the nicest
or my clothes the newest.
I had learned
to bow my head
and smile and nodd
when the words came.
So imagine
my complete surprise
the day I discovered
I was just right
for you.
You raced
across the floor
the customers and cashiers
of that dusty Dairy Queen
looking on is amazement
as you fell into my arms.
I forgot
the roze I'd brought you
in the rush to catch
the laughing kisses
you were standing on tiptoe
to rain upon my lips.
It seems at last
the circle has come round
The meek shall inherit the earth
(you are my earth)
and finally
finally
the second fiddle
plays the sweetest tune.
Let the customers join
the dance if they want to
I can promise
there will be no
cutting in!
