Fire beyond the valley

There's a fire beyond the valley
on the mountain, all alone
blazing high into the darkness
where the light of love once shown

and the light of that great fire
hurls a beacon through the sky
in a silent testimony
of a love, that will not die.

Unheeding in the valley
there stands a girl most fair
with eyes as blue as summer skies
and the firelight, in her hair.

Because of her, in that inferno
the stands a mortal form
with his eyes fixed on the valley
and she who seemed so warm..

And he knows beyond all knowing
though his love for her burns on
that her passion now is ashes
her love for him, is gone.

And he stood there on that mountain
till Death took him away
but an old woman remembers
and today I heard her say

There was a fire beyond the valley
on the mountain all alone
blazing high into the darkness
where the light of love once shown

And the light of that great fire
hurled a beacon through the sky
And I pray that he forgave me...

There fell a tear
from Grandma's eyes.
