Lamplight

Silver pools of lamplight
       sway gently in the
            midnight breeze

The still of night only broken
    by the rustling of
       autumn leaves

Somewhere my heart got lost
          between the gaps
                  of unspoken words

And somehow I knew
    you would never
        know their worth

Silent phrases meant
       for a time much
           earlier than that

Tender goodbyes and a kiss
       on the head could have
           been the last

Now as many miles as our
    long distance bills
         come between

And a mountain of emails span
    from your Arizona desert
         to me

And as the same
    lamplight dances
              outside my room

I wonder what would
  have happened if I
       said, "I love you."
