The Red Balloon (reprise)

My heart was an empty red balloon
When you left
And although the sharpness
Of your absence
From my life
Would make me sad
It would not have broken my heart
Because I expected
Nothing from you
And you can't burst
An empty balloon.

But when you called
And swore that you miss me
And sang softly in my ear
Each breath you spoke
Inflated my heart with hope
And yearning until it was
Full and round with expectation
So that your subsequent silence
Piercing it cruelly
Has left me only
With the burst fragments
Of a useless red balloon.
