It Was Only Yesterday

Taking a quiet
Reflective moment
I wonder how this came to be
It was only yesterday
That we said goodbye
That I cried in your arms
When we were saying farewell
That you kissed me
Softly, lovingly
And then left me alone
It was only yesterday
When you drove off
Taking my heart
With you
Heaped up
On the bottom of your shoe
It was only yesterday
That no one could console me
That I could not stop those tears
I could feel nothing
But the overwhelming pressure
Of the loneliness
That your absence wrought
It was only yesterday
That I was broken
And in despair
That I could not see
Or hear
Or move
I could scarely breath
It was only yesterday
That I was in
That horrid state
Then this morning
After I had wandered
Downstairs
The doorbell rang
And so I forced myself answer it
Hoping I didn't look
As terrible
As I felt
And there you were
Dripping wet
Soaked to the bone
From the rain
You had driven all night
Thousands of miles
I blinked in disbelief
But there you were
With an apology
On your lips
An apology I didn't need to hear
That I simply kissed away
To think that it was only yesterday
That we had said goodbye
But, that was yesterday
And today turned out to be
A miraculous tomorrow
