Promises
As the new year welcomed me,
In a crowd without the one i held,
I promised i would forget you.
The same night a dream visits me,
Tidings of you leaving this world,
It had me reaching for the phone.
But the phone is not an option for me,
And i search for denial in the only way i know,
Even if i just find words that hurt,
They comfort me somehow.
There were not many options open to me,
"Keep it and remember", "Send it so i can",
We need no such reminder,
But it could serve some purpose.
Now i wonder what is best for you and me,
A final goodbye or a new hello,
I am back to where i started,
My walls are back in place,
Slightly crumbly, but they will do.
So forgive the silly words,
Of a hurt and broken man,
Your life took another turn,
But you're still worth knowing,
And i would do it all again.
