i found my soul mate
when i was 15 years old
but i was too dumb
to know it
back then
'cause i had a crush
on his stupid best friend
who was dating a cheerleader
named Melissa Gore
i only knew that i looked
pretty & edible
in my soft pink dress
as i sat there in 
the theater
watching him sit up there
in a chair onstage
telling his friend (my crush)
"Alright, man- 'Earth Angel'..."
and as he belted out the song
he snapped his fingers
and looked at me
with longing
in his hazel eyes
and i was thrilled
to my toenails
but way too shy
to maintain eye contact
he was elected Class Clown
that year
because he was always
a nut
and that was why
i turned him down
when he asked me
if i would go
to the dance with him
(i thought he was joking)
what if i had said yes?
what if we had danced
and kissed
and gone to Dead Milkmen concerts
together and watched Saturday
morning cartoons in each
other's arms?
i have a feeling
things would be
different.
