passage

i was cornered by her first sharp glance
she was bordered by a hundred suitors dancing
for her pleasure and her patience and her time
she was bashful as she held her place in line
ticket stub in hand
torn across the center
she wondered why that guy ever tore it to begin with
what he did with the other half
if it ever had meant anything
if it still would grant admission
if he could somehow use it to get in for free
it never mattered much to me
so, i held the back door open
not trying, but kinda hoping
to let her in
i never felt that freedom was a mortal sin
i've spent so much time ending things
i've forgotten how to begin
i'm just smiling, like any doorman would
