wake up call
the newness of this day left as it came
quickly
within the first few seconds of conscious thought
it left
this day was old before it ever had a chance
as the light streamed in and shook me from sleep
as my eyes squinted
the dream i was torn from fizzled
i awoke happy, for a moment
i rolled and through my arm over the place you occupied
just a few clock ticks ago
i swear
blood drained from my face when my arm caught air
and more air
and came to rest on the blanket
i clenched my fist and took in the fabric
i peered at the dim light trickling through the blinds
i didn't want to get out of bed
but it was killing me to stay there
so i greeted this old day the same way i greet most
flailing
perhaps tomorrow will be different
