cold wind

i was waiting for the humidity to break
and for the clouds to cover the sun
that was relentless
i stood with my feet in the water
fascinating at the way the sand
would pull away from under me
the sensation of thousands
of tiny particles tickling my soles
my feet were numb from
lake michigan
and my body was dripping sweat
from the heat
i closed my eyes and tried to focus
on the sensations that were currently
assaulting from certain degrees of extremes
i whispered to my friends that all i wantedt
to do was strip naked and dive into the sea
(for i've always considered it a sea)
and swim to the bouey and become numb all over
and that would keep me cool for a while
they just raised their eyebrows
and as i stood watching the seagulls
diving toward the water in search of lunch
i can tell you the moment i felt it
and the time 11:21
when the cold air came rushing in
i thought nothing of it
till later that day as i was nursing my sunburn
you called and said you were in town
and wanted to see me
