laying winter to rest

i walked outside to summer
after laying winter to rest
with Dickinson style and fashion
inside an heirloom cedar chest
with great pain and trepidation
i folded winter twice
and tucked it deep, not farthermost
amongst chillier things to hide
--a jagged faded photograph,
nothing much of my left side
--a crumpled tear-stained paper,
your haunting words inside
--a pink plush bear you won for me
along with my heart, for you
...'til she came along and stripped
that meaning from me too
all these memories best forgotten
whilst this bright season's here
lest heartache unleash the winter
before the year...
