Many Loves Ago
Many loves ago,
when I was a girl,
my heart lay naked to the world
Thump, thump, thumping fast,
without hesitation
each time it was touched
And back then, it was touched alot
because it was so desireably new,
so bare, with no wardens
guarding its' precious hold
And my heart was so humble,
so appreciative of being recognized
that it exuded warmth and love
to all that cared to touch it;
Returning love so abundantly,
that it scared some hearts away;
those that could not compete that way
And so, my heart learned
not to be so overzealous,
it learned to restrain...
And in doing so, it built a wall around it
that was difficult to get through,
and that scared other hearts away
because they couldn't find a way around that wall
So my heart became lonely,
and for many years wept in a confused silence;
in mourning for love,
my heart slept...
Many loves after that,
I met you
And there was something about you
that complemented me so well
I felt a calm I had not felt before,
I was not anxious, nor afraid
Loving you came so naturally,
like an April-morning rain
You showered me with your love,
cleansing the hurt away
My heart awakened to another world,
a beautiful world of you
And the wall many loves had built,
slowly began to slip away
'til, soon ,my heart was bare, once more
But this time, only to you
and this time I was not left exposed;
for, you enveloped me in your love
