come morning

i thought that a night of exploration
would make us
more familiar
to each other
and you would want me
to wrap my arms around you
forever

as I kissed you late that night
even after
you fell asleep
and as I
drew you closer
you arranged my arm
underneath you
so I could hold you
comfortably
for us both

I woke up smiling
with you in my arms
and watched you sleeping
for an hour
and then inched out
the waterbed
And when my buddy called
I told him that
my life was changed
because I had woken up with my arms around
the lady I loved

and i never thought you would
deflate
me
as you did
when you told me
you had a nightmare
of a snake
choking you
so much that
you couldn't
breathe

and I went
to the bathroom
closed the door
hugging myself
feeling awkward
and
awful

wondering what was wrong
with me
not wondering
if there was anything wrong
with you

the warm shower didn't help
i tried telepathy and sending you messages
through the bathroom door
hoping that you would
see
what i needed
was you needing
my arms around
you

and instead of me being your dream come true
I felt like the nightmare
you woke up to
come morning

and i was trying
to hold together the pieces
I didn't notice falling into
come morning
