She Had a Tape Recorder
there was a little girl who felt ugly and invisible
she had short tacky hair and blue eyes that cried
when they looked at the moon through the station wagon window
on a wee hour drive with mommy lookin' for daddy
and no one saw her
or heard her
because she was small and inconsequential
so she talked into her tape recorder
taught herself how to spell into her tape recorder
told stories into her tape recorder
sang songs into her tape recorder
interviewed bumblebees into her tape recorder
made herself real into her tape recorder
she had a tape recorder
and she used it until the batteries died
little did she know that someday she would grow into a tape recorder
recording love
playing it back
fast forward
rewind
there it is
it isn't gone
it's still on the tape
thank god
thank god
play it louder
buy me batteries
stock up on the batteries
so that when all the stores are closed
we will be
prepared
