when he goes away

i asked you
"have you ever felt that aching?"
when it was dark at night
and you can hear the laughter
of the apartment down below
and your blanket was no
substitute for arms

i asked you
"do you ever fight the tears away?"
while you drive your car
down the crowded avenue and hear that
song that makes your throat
choke up and your body
left heavy

i asked you
"do you ever wonder about me?"
on those nights when the aching doesn't  
surrender and when the tears are
their own animation and your body
just
can't
take
it
anymore?????

i used to scream for you into my pillow
and ask some infinite questions of the
curtains
they never answered
i found you in the dark before you were here
i thought of you before your body
was formed
and i remembered you when
i saw hearts breaking
and wanted a bandaid to
help mine along

and i think of you still
even though i don't know who you are
i think of your soft caress and gentle words
and wild laughter ringing in my ears
and i think of you when those nights take me
away and don't want to release me back until
dawn is breaking
