summer

The sword of that
long ago loneliness
was the sharp edge of
painfully shy
intimidated by the
curvaceous beauty so well displayed
in revealing attire
but what, really, was revealed?
Now that their blooms
have all faded under a sun of
an existence less full
than mine, I can look back
at what was good about those
languid days of innocence
I often wondered about that
girl under the shade umbrella
at the table furthest from the pool
lost in her world of that book
Did she know how attractive she was?
And why was she hiding
what went beyond the perfectly tanned
but woefully shallow beauty
of those girls who were
only feigning happiness?
How was I to know
she or someone just like her
would bloom inside my heart
before a summer I had not yet
dreamt of?
This will be our summer to shine...
