i wanted you
i wanted you to be the freedom i felt
while driving down the road that you
would make me smile just as much
as rolling green hills do
and that lying on you would feel
just as good as lying down in
the soft green grass that invites me
daily, on a daily, on a daily
basis i wanted you to be the song
i sang outloud to while tapping on
my steering wheel
or the sun shining through my roof
that just broadens my grin
or the stranger i talk to at the
truck stop who has seen all the
states and has the tattoos to
prove it
i wanted you to be that first
vision of the ocean
i wanted you to be that sandy walk
between two groves of trees
i wanted you to be the soft bed i fall into
at night and the book i can't put down'
before i fall asleep
i wanted you
