fan

the heart needs the head
because the heart writes
poor dialogue
        and though it wanders about
    takes bad turns, U-turns, and
left turns without signalling,
my mind doesn't need to rationalize
  what the heart has
already accepted -
that the music my heart plays
        hurts your ears

I try so hard to fan into the
flames that burn in me
    that you resist
afraid, perhaps, that the heat
of a passion that has burned for
            this long
will give your heart
third degree burns
when all you really want
is an electric security blanket

yet even simple appliances
when improperly cared for will
burn down the house
