Small Change of the Heart
Turned my heart inside out
like an old purse
when you're searching for small change
and found the small treasures
in between the debris.
I found the one I loved
because he made me laugh,
and said I had a poet's lips
just before he kissed me.
I found the man
who began as words on a screen,
never met, never touched'
but still my lover nonetheless
I found the guy
who loved me
before I loved myself
and waited for me to see my own splendor.
Affairs end, hearts cool
and eyes look elsewhere for new delight---
but I carry something
from every love I have known.
It can better you, or bitter you---
and always the choosing is your own.
