Just Caught Me Wondering
Wonder how it would have turned out?
Silly setting
Unexpected
But I was overtaken by
rain drops drizzling into the neck of your collar
after you gave me your jacket so I would be dry.
We sat out the storm in that little golf cart
and counted the drops and the rings in the lake where they hit.
And you told me how you used to imagine the raindrops where racing
down the car windows when you were little
And I told you how sometimes I still did.
You handed me a beer from the cooler we had come to rescue
and even though I don't like beer I took a sip
and passed it back to you.
Your T-shirt was so wet it was transparent
and I had to hazard a glance
though even that glance could be dangerous
And if it had been any day a month ago,
I would have chanced a kiss.
But like you know,
there is that other somebody,
(the one who's ring I wear)
So no matter how bothered I am by a disarming smile
or how you tease me till it feels like we are middle schoolers again
I am going to have to settle
for wondering.
