Sleeping With You
When I said sleep with you
I meant something other than sweaty gyrations
implausible sighs,
and a moment when toes kick free of earth.
I meant I wanted to sleep sweet
against your back,
hands in soft repose
leaning against your neck,
my chin tucked away
as I use the sound of your breath
and the beat of your heart
as a counter measure lullabye
sleeping calm and soothing
until I open my eyes
and find you looking at me
with a gentle fondness,
brushing one hair from my eyes
and waiting for me to stretch
and yawn wide
and dear god
I just woke in your arms
and you love me still
and I have peace flowing in my veins
and not a single fear
to menace my day
and it was so glorious
to sleep with you
and savor the thousand quiet joys
I would never had known
unless I slept spooned against you.
Good morning, darling.
