Thin Pale Lady

I caught a glimpse of her,
thin, tall dressed in chic black
the hat tipped so one eye showed,
and that lush mouth---
so red
moist
just made for kissing.
She met my eye for just an instant,
and looked sad--almost apologetic
and she said nothing
but her voice whispered softly
no offense---but I will have him.
And i could see how she might seem
the answer to your dreams at times.
She doesn't speak much---
her silence is profound,
and no man can resist that mouth---
someday she'll get you,
like she got my Dad,
or the friend i loved in college
but don't make it soon?
Maybe you can't fight her off
and maybe she's got your number---
but she has lovers aplenty
and all the time in the world.
I have you,
nestled warm in my soul
cuddled against my heart
and so precious
that i would fly at that bitch,
scratch at her eyes
and damned well do battle
even knowing that someday
she'll have you.
I love you,
and can't offer the delight
of those dark eyes
can't make the promises she can,
and maybe you can't hold her off forever---
but please my love---
not yet?
Promise me that I will not be forgotten
the first time those full lips touch you,
Promise me that she won't get you for keeps
and that someday---somewhen
I will hold you again to my soul.
You don't make promises---
and I don't ask you to---
but I did not find you
against all odds or reason
to give you over
to the Thin Pale Lady
without some kind of fight.
