Loving Too Much
Can a person love too much?, she asked.
And my first impulse
The word that bubbles up from my heart of its own accord is
NO
Love can never be quantified as too much
Can it?
For the human heart is where our soul resides
And learns and grows and eventually returns
To the universe from whence it came
But perhaps I answered hastily at that
Because now I find my own wet, beating chambers
Laying whimpering in the night
Wrestling tears from the dark
As if crying ever solved anything
Except to cleanse the soul of broken promises
And wash away pain as I quiver at the flood.
Can a person love too much?, I ask.
Of course you can
Because you can love in ways you have no right to love
And love another soul not meant to be yours
And love a woman who can never belong to you
And love a heart that never loves you back
And love a soul that never even looks your way
But you can never love too much
I’ll answer in the end
Too much love may be a mistake
But it’s one worth making
Because the love you give
Only adds to the stuff of the cosmos
To be returned to me again
When my own heart is ripped open
And needs love to heal again.
So love me? Please?
