dreamless

if i could rest
for one night in a dreamless sleep
and lie down
on a pillow and not wake up
till the next morning
if i could find something to fill my time
that kept me smiling and
took my time away
maybe if i could drive around
the countryside and find a grove of trees
or a silken meadow and lie down in that
and find shapes in the clouds
maybe if i could look in a mirror and
not see dark circles covering my eyes
i wake up with smeared mascara
and i cover up my naked body as you lie
next to me
if i could somehow find this missing
sentence that you seem to not be able to find
if i could write you a new alphabet
and you could find your words in there
and maybe if i could find those things above
and pass my time then i could stop
wanting to be with you, and i could let
the sheet fall away and let you look at me
as i then would let you turn away
