High School Bump

Damned by the faint praise of
you are SUCH a good friend
I tucked my ego under my arm
and affected a kind of cool
that kept me from being a misfit
a runner with the crowd
but not a player within it
no, I learned even then
that make-up and clothes
and a even a killer walk
never made a girl loveable
if she was on the hunt
and that bluster
perfect hair
and the car Daddy bought
did not make a guy
desirable for very long
even then I knew enough
to seek out the real
sweethearts
unknown outside
the shadows where what
was seen could not be faked
for only there could
a hungry heart be
given its fill
