Redefined
I will remember love
like this
now redefined.
I will remember love
in how much we laugh together
but also in the quiet contentment
I find in your arms.
I will remember love
with this anticipation
the morning before our trip
and I lay and imagine the thrill
of learning a new place with you
and know that two weeks down the road
when someone mentions Chicago
maybe in the news
maybe in the weather
I will smile because
I will remember sharing it with you.
I will remember love
and how fast two people can become cemented
and how "at first sight" can exist
I will look back at those nights when we had to choose
between sleep and a few more hours together
and though I woke up tired
and you woke up tired
we were satisfied
to have had those quiet hours together
talking
learning each other's stories
more of you to take with me in my dreams.
I will remember the way you talk and ever so often
run your hands through your hair
Counting the times you use the word "basically"
or answer "nothing" when I ask "what?"
then end up telling me something fantastic
and I will remember every word because it came from you.
I will remember touching the scar on your chin
kissing you in a hundred different perfect ways
but especially the first night
first kiss
sweet "because it was us" you said.
I will remember thinking
no one had ever kissed me with so much love
and I didn't even know
how much love would come.
I will remember touching my lips to your shoulder
holding my hand over your heart
every move I took to be closer to you
more fully absorb...
curling up with only your skin on my skin
and being warmer than I have ever felt.
I will remember all of this
every moment
whenever I think of this summer
whenever you are there and I am here
whenever I miss you and
whenever I feel a little more alone
only because you aren't beside me
I will remember playing in rivers
and walking on late nights
and kissing on the streets of Clarksburg.
and you.
and I will remember love.
