Something seems to be afoot to keep from seeing this movie in its
entirety. Seriously. I've watched the last part of it 4 or 5
times now, but something always keeps me from seeing the entire
thing. Something (dum dum DUMMMM)- like a force of nature. So
this review is going to be brief, and hopefully it won't even give
away the ending.
Ben Affleck plays Ben, a man on his way down to Georgia to be wed with his fiancée Bridget. A series of disasters, from minor air crashes to fires to trainwrecks to two separate heart attacks (neither of them Ben's) keep him from his goal. Along the way he meets up with Sarah, played by Sandra Bullock, who was on the same flight as Ben. They team up, and the film turns into a buddy-film with good boy, bad girl romantic tension. There's a lot like to like in this film. The cinematography and pacing, especially during the hurricane scene at the end, are terrific, like well-shot music videos. (The "making of" video shows how for some of the more dramatic scenes, they showed the main characters having serious dialog with the storm raging in just-slightly-slow-motion behind, and thanks to some subtle computer effects, in front of them.) There are some very funny scenes, and although the dialog has a few trite moments, over all it's well written. I could really relate to the complex view of relationships this movie presents, as Ben frantically tries to figure out if settling down into marriage has worked for other people, and if it will work for him, and how sometimes a new romance will seem to occur where we least expect it, and we have to choose how to respond to those new feelings. Over all, it was a fun mix of adult and childish themes, and was solidly acted throughout. The soundtrack of this movie is great as well, especially the cover of "Love the One Your With". Check it out, it's a romance that's well worth the rental, or catching on HBO. |
