in bed, late

in bed
late
and you snuggle close
your head in my chest
telling me
of your pain
and your need
for prayer
and i give my advice
even as
something inside me
breaks
as i hear the words
and know
they’re not
the right words
the true words
you need
to bring you back
home
make you feel less alone
fix the broken parts
make you whole

so in the meantime
until i can get it right
i’ll tickle your hair
kiss your cheek
your shoulders
(too small
for all
they have to bear)
make you laugh
tell you
which toothbrush
is yours
and love you like my life
depended on it
