Litany of Longing, Part V: The Hours Creep By Like Cats

The hours creep by
Like cats.
The hours creep by
And that's that.

The hours creep by
With me all alone.
I feel like a dog
Who has lost his bone.

The waiting is hard,
That much is true.
The waiting is hard,
The kisses few.

Actually,
The kisses are none.
You give me no kisses.
Not a one.

You should be giving me
Many kisses, yes you should.
You should be naked in bed,
Naked in my bed made of wood.

Naked in my big bed,
Four-poster and of heavy wood.
You should be naked in my bed.
Yes, you should.

(The hours creep by
Like cats.
The hours creep by
And that's that.)

Some say your eyes
Change color
In this Litany of mine.
I think they've had too much wine.

What color are your eyes?
In a word: Divine.
They are beyond color,
And your body is fine.

Your body is fine
And your eyes the color Beautiful.
Someday you'll love me.
Someday you'll be dutiful.

At times like this I wonder
Just what you meant by "Get away."
I think you were just too stunned.
You didn't know what to say.

So I can forgive you, Holy One.
I can forgive your Soul,
Your Heart of gold.
Getting you in bed is not my only goal.

(The hours creep by
Like cats.
The hours creep by
And that's that.)

If getting you in bed were my only goal,
I'd expect (and deserve) a slap...
Your friend called me a sex monster.
That's crap.

She only wants to keep You from me.
She's mad because she's ugly.
She must be done away with,
Don't you see?

But I'm really a peaceful man.
My threats of violence are just words.
Still, I hope her house burns down
And that she steps in dog turds.

All of this distracts me from You,
And that's a shame.
(I'm not playing games.)
It's very sad what waiting can do.

Waiting can turn pure gold into lead,
Untold riches into mere money.
Waiting cheapens everything,
Turns expensive ham into baloney...

(The hours creep by
Like cats.
The hours creep by...
...And that's that.)
