Words You Do Not Say
Look at me love.
You do not speak of certain things,
as honest as you have been,
but did you think
I could not hear those thoughts
even as you held me?
Do you think I did not know
how much you fear the scar tissue of a soul
that has watched love die,
or that you fear
your love will never fill the hole
left in my heart
when always became never again?
You fear I do not know my own mind---
that a week, a month, a year from now,
I will suddenly look at you
and decide that I was mistaken?
But what you do not know
is that my heart lives day to day
in wild fear that you will decide
that you have waited long enough---
not just for me,
but for every love you have known,
that I will lose you,
not because I took too long,
but because in the end
lonely hurt more than love could heal.
Words we do not say---
but it is time we did my love---
it is time we did.
