When Souls Do Meet

Eyes caught by eyes in a face unknown,
a voice that says your name,
and every name
of every skin you have worn.
Rational thought at war
with a simple truth
as basic as the atomic weight of an element,
and as unprovable a man's belief.
Unshakeable.
And the fear is that once knowing,
this truth cannot be forgotten.
So there is no turning one's back,
no ignoring the knowledge---
there is only the slow soft voice
of the heart awakened from a lifetime of sleep
by the voice it loved
in a life half forgotten,
but never lost.
