The path to Xanadu

The path we face
is choked with thorns
and pitfalls
hidden under turns of ivy
so deep and green
you cannot see
the depth of the danger
lurking underneath.

We will clear the way
thorn at a time
not hand in hand
for we are two
and equal
and the work
will be easier
with two light hearts
and four laboring hands.

Do you remember, lover?
I said before
I didn't like the easy road
the higher value
the greater joy
the most precious gift
I've always found
to lie along
the most treacherous trail.

Smile.  Surely you realize
that if this is so
we are on our way
to a paradise
together.
