modern day fairy tale

she ran

away

with a heart in her hand

red and beating
thumping against her palm

her face streaming
crying tears

they fell into the asphalt stream

sliding past her feet

her toes raw, chapped

skin white with dry skin

white skin against red heart

blue lips against black hair

her mouth an o

he screamed for her to stop

that she was running away with his heart

and he wouldn't know what to do without it

she turned her head backwards

telling him one day he would understand

that she was just borrowing it

her feet kept running

scraping their dry skin on the jagged asphalt

he followed her trail

his blood

then she stopped

said he wouldn't be without a heart

then reached in her chest

and gave him hers

as he ran away

with his feet grating their way

to the western sky

with heart in hand
