Once I Loved a Sailor
The orange-red orb slowly rises
from beneath the sea's
horizon.
Warily,
I open my eyes.
Another night has passed
without him at my side.
Once,
I loved a sailor
but my sailor,
he loved the sea.
The sea,
she is a jealous creature
and quickly demanded his return
I'll come back to you
he promised
me.
When she swallowed him whole
that dark and stormy night,
I heard her laughing
at my heart's blight.
And so,
the sun burns too brightly
through my sorrow's gray haze
and long and lonely are now my days
But, with the gentle light
of the moon's reflection
upon the sea
sleep finally claims my mind
and in my dreams
he'll always be.
Once,
I loved a sailor
but my sailor,
he loved the sea.
