Not one more Night

If I were to die
to live not one
more night
beyond this one
I could still be happy.

True, I would not have lain
in the tall mountian grass
beneath the southern stars
with you..
that is our summer plans.

I would not have climbed
and clammered up the chilly face
of Chimney Rock
clutching your hand
both of us afraid of heights.

I would not have walked
the valley trails with you
in the sudden rain storms
beneath Lynnville Gorge.

I would not have raced
through the midnight surf
of Hunting Island beach
holding your hand
and splashing out
to the campfire.

But..
I have lain gasping
in your arms
long after midnight
both of us laughing
at our exhaustion
and unable to let go.

I have awakened
in a misty Sunday Morning
to see your sleepy brown eyes smiling
and feel the warmth of you against me.

I have sat in a sunny-silent park
no one, even the rangers
anywhere about
and fed the birds
the towees, the chickadees,
the stumbling silly squirrels
and eaten a lunch
that had nothing to do with lunch..
just the fun of being alone together.

I could be happy..
but I am counting
on God himself.
He never starts anything
so wonderful as this
so simply
and brings it to an end
that quickly.

I think there is more
in store for us.
You've seen the plans I have.
I'll just bet
His are even more fun.

Wanna hang around with me
for a few years and watch?
