I Saw Red

I knew tonight would be different
When she whispered her secret in a giggle
‘I bought a new teddy’, the words sounded like a sigh
but my ear tasted it like a promise.
‘And I think you’re gonna like it.’
And suddenly the evening changed.
Made ripe with expectation by a few simple words.
And as my kisses grew deeper
Needier
I pulled the sweater up over her arms and caught the first flash
Of crimson satin
Not fire-engine red, nor candy-apple red
But deeper, richer
A majestic royal crimson
Meant for a queen or maybe a countess
But now destined for my fingers, my lips, my skin
So I loosened her jeans
Anxious to see the dark flow unhindered,
In an exotic snapshot moment meant only for me.
When she stepped away I gasped involuntarily
At the beautiful vision standing there.
Chestnut hair loose; flowing freely across her shoulders
Color made deeper by the crimson satin hiding pale white shoulders
Hips flaring dramatically, as the material stretched taunt
And without a word
For indeed, my words were all twisted up in a knot of desire and raw need
I swept her into my arms
And closing my eyes, I saw red
The color of my love.
The color of my night
And right then, the color of my world and my woman.
I saw red, tasted red, touched red, became red.
