Going Through The Motions

Quicksand pavement sucking in a dozen kids at play
sad faced houses staring down not knowing what to say
I'd love to tell you when
but we'll both be dead by then
Scared faces pressed against cold glass is how I feel today.

I never knew I was lost until you declared me found
you became my favourite pony on my favourite merry-go-round
we stagger through the sand
mildly smashed but hand in hand
never noticing the waves of time erasing our marked ground.

Have you ever seen a hatter sane as sane and looking sad
Have you ever bought a ticket, turned to plastic, joined a fad
it doesn't matter what we find
we're all right in our own minds
never mind the truth when recognition is to be had.

Recycled hearts are always hard to tell from one another
creepy crawly jealousy makes you turn an ugly colour
you're a black hole for emotions
now you just go through the motions
killing time disguised as life, neither one thing nor the other.
