Differences Loom

...I fly my kites much higher than yours
I swim more boldly in rough waters
and when the rain streams down in silver sheets
I embrace it and choose not to share your umbrella

                    but this is irrelevant
let's eat a big pot of hearty homemade spaghetti
                  with garlic breadsticks
               and Mediterranean salad
wash it down with Pinot Noir
                 and forget about it

                       differences loom
I want yellow and spring green in my room
                       you want black and teal
but my Oriental perfume intoxicates you
you are helpless in the depths
                       of my hazel stare
and I bear your burdens as my own
if a stone is thrown in your direction
I catch it and throw it back
         we never lack love
                  in snuggly quantities
there is plenty of hope blooming in a Waterford crystal
vase on our baby grand piano

                  if true trouble comes
we'll greet it and meet it
                    holding hands
                more powerful and resilient
                     a unified front.
