Engulfed
(Fat Tuesday...2001...Gulf coast)
today was an UP day
a perfect sandwich at Subway
a bite of your gooey chocolate chip cookie
a big blue yawning sky
and ambitious clouds
shopping at Super Kmart
three gorgeous bracelets from the quarter machines
and a turquoise rabbit's foot for your keychain
...the depression lifted and the eBuLLience
came bouncing back
as we drove to Sabine Pass listening to your new Sons of the
Pioneers cd
I hugged myself
I was so thrilled to see the Gulf of Mexico
gray and endless
I wanted to jump in and swim to the horizon
but we'd forgotten our beach towels
we ran down to the sand laughing
as free
for a moment
as the balloons released
from the mountain
after we exchanged vows
we'll return often
write our names in the sand
greet the waves
and relish
our smallness
all the things we can't
change...
