What Might Have Been
In the warm sun they sat moist from the summers heat......
Back and forth slowly in the white wooden swing.....
His feet against the ground, pushing them forward and back.....
While she kept hers suspended........
A day that might have been ordered in paradise......
Cool breezes off the river softly blowing her hair.......
Sitting so close to the object of her childhood dream.....
His dimpled cheek reminding her of long ago.....
She felt his legs tiring, and took over the tempo......
Casually they turned and looked at each other......
No words spoken, just soft smiles.....
Spectators of a wedding held across the river........
They listened and watched with sighing hearts....
The brides first dance with her new husband.....
Joyful music echoed across the river.....
Air filled with laughter and joy.........
Clinking of dishes and crystal........
Muffled voices with toasts to the happy couple.....
Silverware clattering against the warm humid air......
Enchanted by a wedding that might have been theirs......
When they had stolen kisses in the night......
And shared a fleeting moment in innocence......
When his hair was dark and raven........
His cheeks were ruddy with shyness........
When her body was tender and yearning......
Her eyes were filled with his youthful charm.....
Bashfully she denied desires not yet learned.......
Obsessed only with the sweetness of his kiss.....
And here they were now, both silent in feelings.......
Mournful in the sadness of what might have been......
