My Best Friend is an Invisible Monkey

my best friend is an invisible monkey but you
          don't want to hear
about that
you want the lowdown on my desire
the story of my fetishes, maybe
the map of my disenchantment
you're needing the news
the extra extra
pillow talk high wire walk pastel chalk who loves who
in pink and blue
but let me imbue this didactic mess with nonsense
to throw you off
a red earring in the trail
so that confusion will prevail and the ship won't sail
no
and the dog won't hunt
or even
wag
his tail
and the paper
won't sell
my competitors have the gloss
and the better boss
all I got is stale tortilla chips
and Picante sauce
but toss me some reason
and accidental rhyme
and maybe the prince
will climb through the window
after all
now is not the time
epiphanies belong in some distant horizon poem
it's not in me at the moment
I'm a bumbling idiot
humbled by a nameless ache.
